Scoring high marks is more important than gaining knowledge - this has become the Dictum in Education since the 80s and 90s.
Right from the day a kid joins a school, she or he keeps hearing phrases like "work hard", Study hard" to get "good marks", to "score high"....Such words make a child feel that "studying" is a very difficult task and that he has to go through this 'hardship' for more than a decade.
Instead, parents at home and teachers in school should make the kids feel that schooling and studying is a pleasure.
Encourage them by praising when they achieve even a little amount of success.
Make them understand that working out Mathematics is FUN.
Let them understand that History is nothing but knowing about our ancestors.
Make them feel eager to learn about scientific facts by showing them simple and interesting experiments which will arouse their curiosity.
Kindle their interest in learning new languages by highlighting the similarities between two languages or by explaining how poets and writers have beautifully manipulated words to express their feelings.
The more creative you are as a parent/teacher, the more interesting a subject will become to the kid who is learning.
Let him understand that gaining knowledge is as important as scoring good marks. Once he understands this, being a topper will no longer be a difficult task for him.....
